Custom Medications for Every Animal
Every animal is different. Size, species, temperament, and medical history all affect which medications work and how they need to be administered. Commercial drugs come in fixed doses and limited forms. Compounding removes those limits.
We work with your veterinarian to formulate medications that are:
- The right dose for your animal's exact weight and species
- In a form that's actually possible to administer—no more wrestling with pills!
- Free of allergens, dyes, or additives that your animal can't tolerate
- Available when a commercial version is on backorder or discontinued
Small Animal Compounding
We compound medications for dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, reptiles, and other exotic or small animals. If your pet has ever refused a pill, gagged on a capsule, or needed a dose that simply doesn't exist commercially, we can help.
Available Delivery Forms
- Flavored liquids (chicken, tuna, salmon, beef, bacon)
- Transdermal gels (applied to the ear flap)
- Chewable medicated treats
- Tiny custom-sized capsules
- Rectal suppositories
- Topical wound powders and formulations
Common Reasons Pet Owners Come to Us:
- Their cat refuses every pill and fights every syringe—a transdermal ear gel changes everything.
- Their dog needs a dose that falls between the standard commercial tablet sizes.
- A medication their pet has been on for years is suddenly on backorder.
- Their rabbit or bird needs a pediatric-scale dose that no commercial product provides.
Large Animal & Equine Compounding
North Central Florida is horse country. With Marion County's equestrian farms, ranches, and training facilities just south of Gainesville and working cattle operations across the region, the need for reliable, high-quality large animal compounding is real.
Curative Medicine partners with equine veterinarians and large animal practitioners to compound medications for horses, cattle, goats, and other livestock. With a prescription from your veterinarian, we can formulate:
- Equine-specific doses that match your horse's exact weight and condition
- Medications in forms suitable for large animals (pastes, powders, oral solutions)
- Formulas for medications that are commercially unavailable or discontinued
- Custom antiparasitic, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial preparations
- Compounded supplements and nutritional support formulas

Frequently Asked Questions: Veterinary Compounding
What types of animals do you compound medications for?
We compound medications for small animals, including dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, and reptiles, as well as large animals, including horses, cattle, goats, and other livestock. If your veterinarian can prescribe it, we can likely compound it, regardless of species.
My pet refuses to take pills. What are my options?
A lot. We can reformulate most pet medications into a flavored liquid (chicken, tuna, salmon, beef), a transdermal gel applied to the ear flap, a soft chewable treat, and more. The right form depends on the medication and your pet. Our pharmacists can advise on what's most appropriate for your specific situation.
Does my pet need a prescription for a compounded medication?
Yes. Compounded veterinary medications require a valid prescription from a licensed veterinarian. Your vet can fax the prescription to us at 866-291-1556 or call it in to 352-565-1177. We're happy to work directly with your vet's office to clarify any formulation details.
How long does it take to fill a compounded pet medication?
Most compounded pet medications are ready within 24 to 72 hours. Turnaround time depends on the complexity of the formulation. When we receive the prescription, we'll give your vet's office or you a specific timeline.
Do you compound medications for horses and large animals?
Yes. Equine and large animal compounding is one of our specialties. We serve farms, ranches, and veterinary practices throughout North Central Florida, including Marion County's horse community. With a prescription from your large animal vet, we can compound medications in the dose and form your animal needs, including formulas that aren't commercially available.
Can you compound a medication my vet can't find commercially?
Often, yes. If a medication has been discontinued, is on backorder, or doesn't exist in a form suitable for your animal, compounding may be the solution. Call our pharmacists at 352-565-1177 to discuss your specific situation. We'll let you know what's possible.
What is a transdermal ear gel for cats?
A transdermal gel is a medication formulated to be absorbed through the skin. For cats, we apply a small amount to the inside of the ear flap—a thin-skinned area with good blood flow—so the medication is delivered without the cat needing to swallow anything. It’s one of the most effective and stress-free ways to medicate cats that won’t take oral medications.
